The Mission or aim of Bad Latitude is to chronicle our adventures around the world, and hopefully in some way act as a portfolio in order to sell travel, surf and sailing articles which will in turn perpetuate the whole adventure.

The equipment used to bring this site to life is one old Olympus OM10 35mm SLR camera used for the more professional landscape and action shots. The lenses used at the moment are of course the standard 35mm, and the a 100-400mm zoom lens. A Polarising filter is also used. We will also be using a small instant camera for any location where a larger SLR camera would be either too conspicuous (i.e. dangerous) or too much hassle to carry. The film is either developed and scanned on location or if the resources do not permit it will be sent back to Rich in the UK who develops them and scans for use on the site. The video used on Bad Latitude is taken with a Sony TRV8000 digital 8 camcorder, due to the hostile (for camcorders especially) environment we film in the camcorder is protected using Ewa's sports housing, which protects from sand and salt and allows underwater shots to a depth of 10m. The tapes are sent back to Rich who uses Pinnacle Studio 7 to cut the shots together, adds music and graphics and produces the mpegs we have in the media archive.

The site itself has been designed with ease of updating, and navigation in mind (hence the frameset). A lot of the more frequently updated sections of the site are asp pages as opposed to static html, this allows logs to be easily uploaded into a database which will automatically shunt the existing log into the archive. The archive is then sortable by date, location and log number. The media archives are built around a similar system allowing users to define categories, and sort by file size; as is the voting forum. The whole lot is linked to the update alerter which updates subscribers if a particular section is updated, entirely automatically via e-mail. The subscriber can also customise any part of the update alerter they wish to at any time. It all makes for a very versatile system that hopefully adds a little value for our readers, and makes Rich's updates very easy! Special thanks go to Rich for providing the code for the asp pages, and of course offering to update the site. (Still reckon you should have come with us though!)

I hope you enjoy the site - Leigh.

Update 16/06/01

Due to the NT host that was hosting the asp pages shutting down Bad Latitude with no reason or warning I have had to revert the whole site to html. The upshot of this is that I lost all of my subscribers, so if you subscribed before June 2001 you will need to join the new mailing list, see the Update Alerter page for instructions on how to do this.

Update 17/07/01

Today we received our first web award.
