This is the latest tale of travelling adventure, for previous logs visit the archives. If you are new to Bad Latitude and wish to get a better idea of the whole adventure then it is best to start at the very beginning. The logs are updated when we get the chance, due to the erratic nature of sailing it is difficult to know exactly when we will be able to update the site, so for this reason we have the update alerter which will inform of any update via e-mail. |

Issue 1 - 01/01/2001 Weybridge, UK Jon, a sailing veteran compared to the rest of us had always talked of his adventures voyaging in the Med. I myself always thought that this kind of travelling lifestyle would suit me in retirement, or at least when and if I had substantial sums of money behind me, so Jon's idea never really got taken seriously as an achievable aim, and besides who wants to spend their time couped up in a 40 foot sailboat? Sharing space with a friend in my flat was difficult enough, and then there was plenty of room. |

So how did this website arise if no one but Jon was keen? Well on a rare surf trip down to Bournemouth myself and Jon were stuck in traffic for three hours. I will have to say with hindsight that this was probably the best traffic jam I could have been stuck in. Jon mentioned the idea again, and something just clicked into place in my brain; my financial situation was precarious, don't get me wrong I was doing OK, nice car, flat, good job but I always felt there was more to life than battling to get to work, appeasing bosses and mortgage companies. I called my girlfriend Tracy straight away, this was the answer! The more I spoke of the idea or "the yacht thing" as it became known (what else can you call it without being cheesy?) the more it made sense, we found around ninety percent of people said we should go for it! The doubters, well they doubted "what about your CV/career/future/retirement?!" Retirement now that's a good one! Good luck to those who believe life is about being able to afford your frailest years. So we were on, we knew of a Greek yacht dealer whom Jon had used twice before and therefore trusted so that was not a problem..... So the crunch time came and went, we found our initial deadline for March 2001 was a pipe dream. We all became concerned at the financing of the yacht, and Jon's indecision led myself and Tracy to think about crewing on others' yachts with a view to perhaps one day own our own boat and sail where we wanted. Jon is still not totally out of the equation but is a hard man to pin down. Find out what we do next and how we get on by subscribing to the mailing list. |
